Grant's Science Project #1

(I hope you have fun doing this experiment. I did. From Grant)

Purpose:

To show that air expands and contracts.

Equipment:

Pail,
Plastic Pop Bottle,
Balloon,
Warm and Cold Water

Method:

  1. Put a bottle in freezer for 1 hour.
  2. Remove the bottle from freezer and put a blown up balloon on the neck of the bottle.
  3. Fill a pail with warm water.
  4. Place the bottle in the warm water.
  5. Watch the balloon.
  6. Next put warm water in the bottle for 1 minute.
  7. Empty the bottle and put a blown up balloon on the neck of the bottle.
  8. Fill the pail with cold water.
  9. Place the bottle in the cold water.
  10. Watch the balloon.

Observations:

When the cold bottle was put in warm water the balloon grew bigger and exploded off the top of the neck of the bottle.

When the warm bottle was put in cold water the balloon shrunk smaller.

Conclusions:

When air warms up it expands and when air cools down it contracts.
