The
Upper Ottawa Valley Geology Club
is presenting a free talk on
“Mineral Collecting in the Cascade Mountains
of British Columbia” by David Joyce,
a mineral collector from Newmarket, Ontario.
The talk will start at 7 pm at the Deep
River Public Library on Wednesday, November
24. It is open to the public.
David Joyce collects mineral specimens in
Canada and internationally. His talk is
about collecting world-class Japan-law
quartz crystals and other minerals at one of
the most scenic collecting localities
imaginable. The site is located in the
high-altitude Cheam Range of the Cascade
Mountains of B.C., alongside glaciers and
ice fields.
|
The talk will consist of:
-
images and discussion of beautiful scenery,
-
collecting techniques and displays of excellent
specimens, and
-
observations on how the climate has changed over
the past 22 years.
Mineral and outdoor enthusiasts of all ages should
find something of interest in this presentation.
David Joyce has been a mineral collector since he
was 12 years old. He grew up in Scarborough where
he was a member of the Rockids, the junior arm of
the Scarborough Gem and Mineral Club. After
graduating from the Haileybury School of Mines, he
worked across Canada in the explosives and mining
businesses. Later, he designed and built mining
complexes. Most recently, he was Vice President of
Business Development for SNC-Lavalin Engineers and
Constructors. He taught in the engineering faculty
of the University of Toronto for eight years.
