News & Notices - 2008

2008 April 9

Annual General Meeting

The Club's AGM is scheduled for a week from today - Wed April 16, 7:00 to 10:00 pm.  It will be held at 21 Frontenac Street (Deep River), and we'll include in the meeting a clinic for performing a comprehensive inspection of a BCD (using a BCD inspection check list we developed last year).  We'll also include a short scuba flick or slide show concerning a recent tropical trip.  The business end of the meeting will be held at the start (to get it over with), which will include the voting of the 2008 executive, an overview of the financial status of the club, a description of the 2008 Membership process (also described below), and an overview of the 2008 programs for Events and Training.

Events Information and Schedule

<Events Calendar>

In addition to the AGM, a series of dive events and other social events are being planned for 2008.  The attached file explains it all, and provides a schedule that we'll be trying to adhere to.  Please pay attention to the notes at the bottom of the schedule concerning notifying the event leader that you are interested, and confirming at the same time that the event is proceeding as scheduled (the events are subject to change, depending on interest and local dive and weather conditions).

Equipment Maintenance

The annual maintenance campaign is underway.  We had a healthy turnout with people participating in the shuttle service.  In total, we shipped 29 tanks and 15 reg sets to North Bay for annual servicing.  The BCD inspection clinic (included with the AGM, next week) is another component of the Equipment Maintenance Program.

Training Program

The Training Program is kicking into the next gear in April with the Rescue Diver course starting in late April, and the Basic Scuba course starting at the end of April.  Its still possible to get in on the Rescue Diver course (contact Peter Angell at 613-584-4617 right away), but we are experiencing an excessive demand for the Basic course.  Registration for the Basic course is underway this week.  We'll be considering running a second Basic course later this summer because of the demand.

Club Registration Process

This year we're operating the club in a different manner - as a dive association.  Towards this, we will not have a membership fee, but instead we'll be supporting the financial viability of the club by slightly increased air fill charges.  This re-arrangement is better-oriented towards a user-pay approach.  For the people that dive less frequently, the costs associated with participating will be lower, and for those that dive a lot, the cost will add up to the equivalent of the 2007 membership fee.  One of the other benefits of this change is that we hope to encourage the divers that we've trained (and new divers to the area) to more-actively participate in the club.  Although we won't be using membership forms, in the interest of safety and liability management we will require each diver to complete a NAUI Liability Waiver and a DRUC Safety Information Form (documenting training and experience level, and frequency of diving in the last few years).   If you are “new to the club” you will also be required to perform a simple checkout dive with our instructor to ensure that your skill level remains satisfactory.  These registration activities must be completed in advance of participating in any club dive events (as the instructor will not necessarily be present on club dives).

Through these changes, we hope to facilitate more participation in dive events and continue to maintain a high standard for safety.

Keep posted for further updates!!

Thanks

Marc Audet
