Providing Clean Water, One Well at a Time

It has been a while since we completed our water-well project in India, but we wanted to update the community about how it went. As many of you may know, in July and August of 2009 we travelled to Tamil Nadu, a southern state of India, to implement a bore-well for a tribal village. This village was named Kondanoor-Pudur, and was in desperate need of clean drinking water. Some of you may be wondering why or how we even got into this project. Our inspiration for the project came when we were visiting our relatives in India on previous trips. Our own family is from Tamil Nadu, and as young kids, we noticed how so many people were living without a clean and reliable source of water there. More...

Riverbank Donation

The Riverbank Project is $500 richer thanks to the generosity of local artisans. Bill Bishop, who is spearheading the waterfront improvement project in Deep River recently accepted a $500 donation from Leslie White, of the Valley Artisans Co-op. The donation was a portion of all sales made at the Artisans Co-op during the month of March.

If you would like further information about the project just email bishopw@magma.ca.

North Renfrew Family Services Penny Drive

School is out but not for long. September is on its way and children will be scrambling again to get supplies for school. Keeping kids in school is expensive and some families have difficulty making sure that theirs are not left out of some of the activities that every child should have the privilege of participating in.

That of course is where the North Renfrew Family Services (NRFS) comes in to hopefully level the playing field for all the kids regardless of economic inequalities. Of course that also takes money so the Board decided to have a Penny Drive during July and August.

The fact is that a lot of people have jars of pennies around the house that are really only good for door stops and will never get spent because they are more trouble than they are worth to take to the bank and too heavy to take shopping. Counting out 353 pennies for a tube of toothpaste also irritates the shoppers in line behind you.

The same is true of the paper Canadian Tire money. How many bundles of that does the average household have lying around, always forgotten when you go shopping. They get too thick to keep in your wallet and Canadian Tire is not offended if you never take them back.

How will NRFS convert these inconvenient mounds of metal and paper into useable currency? Well, how else - Volunteers. We have people who are committed to count and roll the pennies for transfer to the bank. The Canadian Tire Money will also be sorted and counted and though it is hard to believe, there are buyers for those wads of paper known only to NRFS staff.

So this is a fund raiser that will cost you nothing and tidy up your living space. Take your pennies and paper to the Bean House or to the NRFS office in the Medical Building at 109 Banting Drive.

Call 613 584 3358 if you have questions.

Let's have a little contest. No rewards, just bragging rights. Marg Rose has collected 7.5 kg of pennies to donate. Anyone beat that?
