A  Whispered History:

The People of Buchanan Township

Follow The Whisper....
It Will Tell You All You Want To Know

A Whispered History: The People of Buchanan Township is a virtual oral history exhibit created by Deep River historian Elizabeth Bond and web curator Fayiaz Chunara, in partnership with The School House Museum and Bright Ideas Software.
The impetus for this project was the broad bank of stories that Gerald shared with Elizabeth while they collaborated on an archaeological survey of the former Buchanan Township initiated by Atomic Energy of Canada Limited at Chalk River during the summers of 2006 and 2007. This research is primarily based on Gerald’s accounts of the community where he spent his boyhood years.
A Whispered History: The People of Buchanan Township hopes to rekindle an awareness of Buchanan’s rich heritage in order to ensure that the stories of Buchanan’s longsuffering residents are captured forever.

Sarah Boudens is currently ranked #1 in Canada and will represent Canada this summer at the Beijing Olympic Games. In the sport of Whitewater Slalom Kayaking, Sarah is at the top of the game.

Sarah started paddling at the young age of 9 with the Valley River Runners, a local paddling club in the Ottawa Valley. In August 1994, she attended her first race at the Madawaska Kanu Centre in Barry's Bay and has not looked back.

In her junior years, Sarah dominated the women's class in Canada; she was a four-time Canadian Junior National Champion, and a member of the Junior National Team. From 1999-2001, Sarah competed at either the Junior World or Pre-World Championships. Once entering the senior category, she joined the Senior National Team program, competing at various World Championships, World Cups and Pan American Championships.

It is no surprise that Sarah qualified for the 2008 Olympic Games. Her motivation and desire are remarkable. Unfunded, she spent this past year traveling, taking advantage of fantastic training and racing opportunities in both Europe and Australia.

If you want to find out more about Sarah or help support her on her journey to the Olympics. Visit her website www.sarahboudens.ca.

A darkly comic and startlingly honest novel, A Week of This follows the lives of an extended family over one increasingly desperate week. At the centre of the novel is 38-year-old Manda, a tough, sarcastic woman who has yet to make peace with the town she was brought to as a teenager after her parents’ messy divorce. Her estranged mother is crazy, her father is ill and in retreat, her damaged older brother is growing restless and distant, her stepbrother is a grown-up teenager without any real friends, and her husband is a tight-lipped, depressed store-owner who has been pressing Manda to have a baby.

Full of barbed dialogue and hilariously deadpan descriptions of family dynamics and the kind of awkward social dances that get performed every day, A Week of This is a book for people who always feel a little out of place, right where they are. People who are smart enough to know something has gone wrong, but can’t figure out how to fix it. People who know they aren’t kids anymore, but are not quite ready to grow up.

Available at the Loon's Nest in  Deep River or through www.Amazon.ca

The Rotary Club of North Renfrew

http://www.rotarynr.ca

The Rotary Club of North Renfrew (Deep River) is holding a competition to find local photos for the 2009 Deep River and Area Rotary fundraising calendar.

The annual calendar is very popular as a gift, because it has beautiful local scenes that result in 500 copies being sold. Over $4000 is raised each year to help fund the local Rotary club's service activities. Colourful shots showing local people, activities or scenes, in any season, are welcome.  Horizontal shots are better for the calendar format.

We need a photo for each of the 12 months, plus one for the front cover. Chosen photos will be printed in the calendar with the name of the photographer, who will also receive a free calendar.
The deadline for submissions is the end of 2008 August.

Please look through your photo collections and send electronic files to calendar@rotarynr.ca
