Nothing new ever happens in Deep River?

Wrong! This summer will see new things happening at the waterfront. The steep hill in front of the Centennial Rock which in recent years has become the playground for our resident geese population will be getting a face lift. A paved terrace over more than 30 metres long will be constructed along the hill and the remainder of the hill upstream will be terraced to provide grassed seating areas. Seating areas? Some of you may remember the events that took place at the waterfront in the 70s with a floating stage moored just offshore. The new waterfront will become a community focus, a place where entertainment will be provided during the summer months. Our seniors will have a place to hang out and in addition to benches and picnic tables the terrace will have a picnic shelter. Our visitors will no longer have to sit in their vehicles and eat lunch in the parking lot. When word gets out more visitors will get to know Deep River as more than a Tim Horton’s stop. They will head to the waterfront and maybe stop and check out our local businesses.

From

To complete the revitalization, the forest along Brockhouse Way will be cleaned up and replanted and the walking trail along the river from Brockhouse Way to the terraces will be widened and surfaced for wheelchair access. Just to make it more interesting a creek will be formed and a bridge installed. Maybe a kissing bridge?

And the geese will be encouraged to leave.

Wedding Plans in the works? How about pictures on the terrace?

This is a community project. That means that although the Town will contribute to its cost, a lot of the construction work will be by volunteers and financial support will come from businesses and private citizens. And the project will be carried out by a volunteer project team.

We already have significant funds pledged by a number of Deep Riverites. Do you want to contribute? All it takes is a cheque made out to the Town of Deep River dropped off at the Town Hall. And you will receive a receipt for income tax purposes. We would really appreciate contributions from the kids that grew up in Deep River and have gone off to make their fortunes. Consider it as giving back a little.

Just address you letter to the

Deep River Waterfront Improvement Project,
Town of Deep River,
