Sacred ceremony returns to Oiseau
Rock

It was a sight reminiscent of days long past
on the Great River. Last Wednesday, a flotilla of ten boats
gathered in front of Oiseau Rock on the Ottawa River.
Members from local First Nations and residents of the Ottawa
River community gathered to study and celebrate the
prehistoric pictographs that adorn the cliff face. This
natural monument is a sacred site for Anishnabe Algonkins of
the area. Elder Peter Decontie, Firekeeper of the Kitigan
Zibi Anishinabeg First Nation of Maniwaki, conducted a
smudging ceremony on a rock ledge surrounded by ancient
glyphs of canoes, birds, and fish. Joann McCann Magill,
noted Oiseau Rock historian and founder of the Friends of
Oiseau Rock advocacy group, led a tour of the pictographs
from her kayak using illustrated cards to help viewers
distinguish the ancient art underneath prominent modern-day
graffiti. With over 75 pictographs identified to date,
Oiseau Rock is the most significant rock art site in the
Quebec portion of the Canadian Shield. Oiseau Rock is a
growing source of pride for local communities. It has long
been recognized as the jewel of this stretch of the Ottawa
River, which is soon to be granted heritage designation.
Quebec's Ministry of Tourism is investing in hiking trails
to make the crest of Oiseau Rock accessible by land
transportation for the first time, and a documentary film
about the rock's significance is slated to be released next
year. Oiseau Rock, located 8 miles downriver from Deep
River, is a cultural treasure shared between Ontario's
Renfrew County and Quebec's Pontiac and Sheen counties,
including the First Nations communities of Maniwaki and
Golden Lake. Its midway location requires a pan-community
effort to protect it from the onslaught of graffiti that
desecrates the sacred site every summer as leisure boaters
feel compelled to leave their calling cards on the rock
face.

The Valley Artisans' Coop has recently bid farewell to a
couple of
long-time members. Photographers Vic Thompson and Don McQuade have
retired. We wish them the very best, and will miss them.
Botanical artist, Aliya Ebrahim, is also taking a step back, but we
are
fortunate that she is not leaving us altogether. A smaller offering
of
Aliya's work will continue to be available at the Valley Artisans'
Coop
beginning in July. A full selection remains on the wall through June.

Two of our members, Leslie White-Quilt Artist and Susan Fraser-Sketch
Artist, will be participating in Art Matters Downtown Studio Tour in
Pembroke in July and August. This event is hosted by the Historic
Downtown Pembroke merchants' association, (the PDDC). Artists work
will
be displayed in businesses throughout Pembroke from July 4 through
the
Labour Day weekend. The Art Matters Downtown Studio Tour begins at
the
Pembroke Waterfront. The tour began in the summer of 2006, when local
artists and artisans were paired with Pembroke businesses. These
businesses provided store space in which the Artists could present
their
photography, sculpture, pottery, textiles and paintings. Visitors to
these locations have the opportunity to see the art, become more
familiar with the Artist, and learn about the styles of Art as well.
Summer hours - The Valley Artisans' Coop will not have extended
summer
hours this year. Our regular hours remain in effect 10:00-5:30 Monday
to
Saturday, 10:00-5:00 on Sunday.
