DRCAN - Like
to join a new group of young adults doing fun projects in town?
Shelley Rolland-Poruks
is the co-chair of a new local group called the Deep River Community Action
Network (DRCAN). She is inviting young adults with energy and ideas to
join the 10 DRCAN members already meeting regularly. Initial activities being
planned by the group include running a band night to raise money to fund
future community improvement projects. These projects include improving
trails, updating community websites, gathering and providing information for
newcomers to town, volunteering to help in Canada Day events, etc. If this
sounds interesting to you, email Shelley for more information at rollands@aecl.ca

CREATE - Creating the Future of Chalk River
In response to the restructuring of
AECL and to the need for a new, multi-purpose research
reactor, the Chalk River Employees Ad hoc TaskforcE for
a national laboratory (CREATE) was formed in August
2009. CREATE is a grass-roots, non-partisan group of
volunteers that includes current and former employees at
Chalk River. These volunteers developed a concept for a
future Chalk River National Laboratory (CRNL), consulted
with CRL staff, and obtained their support. more...

Deep River
Riverbank Project Update
It’s happening. With
our success in obtaining a $58000 grant from the
Trillium Foundation we will now begin Phase II of the
Riverbank Project, terracing of the hillside at the
Centennial plaza. We still need some additional funding
but are confident that there will be additional
contributions once work gets underway on May 10. Perhaps
there are some ex Deep Riverites who have not yet
"gotten around to it". more...
If you would like further information about the project just email bishopw@magma.ca.

Petawawa
Heritage Society
The Petawawa Heritage Society received a grant for ten
thousand dollars for the Log Structures Relocation
Project (the Relocation) was to undertake the transfer
of two log structures, one 17’ x 17’ and the other
18’ x 30’, that are replica examples of 19th century
buildings. The Relocation would have these structures
moved from their current location on the range control
area of Canadian Forces Base Petawawa and transplanted
to the Petawawa Heritage Village site for use in public
and educational programming. The log structures will
represent the Leder Family homestead and will depict the
German cultural influence of the Town of Petawawa in the
mid-19thcentury. The building where moved November 2009
and restoration will begin in Spring of 2010.
